Translation as Discovery
Sujit Mukherjee; Orient Longman; pp 81; Rs 150
The emphasis throughout is on the element of discovery inherent in the making as well as in the reading of translations. The author states that translation is necessary to any developed literary culture, and argues that translation into English has made it possible for Indian literary text to be read and discussed more widely. The book covers aspects of dealing with the role of the translator and the method s/he could adopt. It also offers a " practical criticism course" on translation, which allows the reader to evaluate a translation. And lists a selection of translated work covering the period 1930-1992.
